Alabama at 5-2: How the Season Got Here
Five straight wins with at least 45 points each, then two SEC losses in two weeks. A look back before the stretch run.
Tuscaloosa, Ala. Alabama scored at least 45 points in each of its first five games this season. It has scored 27 total in the two games since.
The 5-0 Start
The Tide opened with a 48-10 win over East Carolina, then won 45-17 at Kentucky. The signature win came on Sept. 19 against Florida State, a year after the Seminoles upset Alabama in Tallahassee. Florida State jumped out to a 21-6 lead before Alabama scored touchdowns on five straight possessions to take control. A lightning delay pushed back kickoff and interrupted the second quarter, and the teams agreed to skip halftime.
Keelon Russell completed 23 of 30 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns in that game, ran for another score, and did not throw an interception. Lotzeir Brooks caught eight passes for 101 yards, and Alabama finished with 615 total yards in a 50-36 win.
Alabama followed with a 49-18 win over South Carolina and a 56-23 win at Mississippi State.
The Skid
A 20-17 home loss to Georgia on Oct. 10 was followed by a 26-10 loss at Tennessee, where Alabama turned it over four times. It was the first time since 2007 that Alabama lost consecutive regular-season games. After the Tennessee loss, DeBoer publicly backed offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb's play-calling.
The Road Ahead
Texas A&M visits for Homecoming on Oct. 24, followed by an open date, road trips to LSU and Vanderbilt, Chattanooga at home, and Auburn in the Iron Bowl on Nov. 28. The SEC Championship Game is Dec. 5 in Atlanta.
